Before the first module, machine or rack arrives, a project site needs access, levels and drainage. These civil works are often treated as simple, but delays here push back every trade that follows.
Access roads come first
Trucks and cranes need a road that can carry them in all weather. A well-built access road has a compacted subgrade, a granular sub-base and a base course, with a surface suited to the traffic. See how the layers work in our road diagram.
Excavation and earthwork
Bulk excavation, filling and compaction create the levels for foundations, yards and buildings. Trenching for cables and pipes is planned with the electrical and mechanical layouts so trenches are dug once.
Drainage protects everything else
Standing water weakens roads and foundations and can damage equipment. Side drains, culverts and pipe crossings should be built early, before the monsoon if possible.
Equipment and crews
Excavators, loaders, rollers and compactors are mobilised for each phase. Combining civil works with logistics lets one team schedule equipment, materials and transport together.
A simple planning checklist
- Survey levels and soil information
- Road, yard and drainage layouts
- Trench routes agreed with electrical and mechanical teams
- Equipment plan for each phase
- Material sources for aggregates and fill
